As part of the effort to promote more integrated, inclusive, and sustainable urban development in Indonesia, Indonesia's Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), in collaboration with Monash University Indonesia, hosted the seminar Rethinking Urban Growth: Addressing Urban Sprawl through Governance, Innovation, and Inclusive Planning in Indonesia on Friday, May 2, 2025. Planologic participated as the event's media partner, supporting the dissemination of key ideas and discussions to a broader audience.
The challenge of urban sprawl
The seminar focused on the growing challenge of urban sprawl—the uncontrolled expansion of urban areas—which continues to shape the future of cities across Indonesia. This phenomenon has contributed to a range of issues, including traffic congestion, environmental degradation, the loss of productive land, and increasing social vulnerability.
Bringing stakeholders together
Bringing together representatives from government, academia, and other key stakeholders, the forum explored strategies to address the complexities of urbanization through stronger governance, innovative approaches to urban planning and management, and more inclusive planning practices.
“The seminar aimed to foster a shared understanding of urban sprawl, strengthen cross-sector collaboration, and encourage the development of policies and planning innovations that support more adaptive, collaborative, and sustainable urban growth in Indonesia.”
